Mission
The Global Gallery is a platform for artistic expressions from around the world that:

  • Promotes cross-cultural understanding and dialogue through different media.

  • Raises awareness around major global challenges through the arts.

  • Inspires deep thinking (and feeling) through creativity.

  • Showcases the personal interpretations and talent of young people through an open and shared space that creates opportunities for artists.

  • Background
The Global Gallery was established as a program of TakingITGlobal in April of 2001. Since then the program has made massive progress, constantly striving to become an outstanding space for young artists to express their talent, as well as an inspiring platform for creativity and multicultural dialogue that pursues high standards and reflects the program's vision and mission.
Below is a brief history and some key milestones of the Global Gallery:

  • The first exhibit was entitled "Cultural Expressions from Around The World" and was launched both online and at a Youth Empowerment Event held at the Sky Dome in Toronto, Canada.

  • The "Life As I Know It" contest was run and attracted submissions from 10 different countries. The key highlight from this contest was a package from Ghana, which included 20 submissions from 20 different young people in Tema (a village in Ghana).

  • The "Promoting A Culture of Peace" art contest was organized as a response to the events of September 11th. One of TakingITGlobal's active members in Canada was inspired to organize this contest in her school and as a result, created a card that displayed the winning submissions.

  • By February of 2003, the Global Gallery had attracted more than 2000 submissions from over 100 countries.

  • In March 2003, through support from Hewlett Packard, TakingITGlobal created the Monthly Contests program, which focussed on attracting submissions on specific themes such as Cultural Diversity, Health Promotion, Peace and Conflict, Environmental Awareness, and Understanding Poverty.

  • In June of 2003, TakingITGlobal launched a new version of the Global Gallery that allowed artists to more effectively organize their submissions and also included a new design and overall look-and-feel.

  • In December 2003, in conjunction with the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) the exhibition "A Window on the Information Society" was organized in Geneva. The exhibition included the most relevant submissions to the Gallery on the theme and a short video created with images, words, and music.

  • In May 2004, a new design and admin system was launched to balance the concept of an open space with higher overall artistic standards within the Global Gallery.

  • In May the Global Gallery also launched "Intersections", a one year program that will gather the artistic interpretations of members around the theme of 'intersections' through diverse media of expression. The submissions will then blend as components of a creative process that will include a virtual gallery, a physical exhibition, multimedia, and a publication.

    Village Galleries
    Village Galleries
Our essential hope is to spark imagination and empower the young people;building confidence, self-esteem and hope. Children will document and share their culture with each other and ultimately with the world. With these goals in mind, the VILLAGEGALLERIES team will teach camera basics, lighting, composition, the development of point-of-view, and sequencing for narrative. Classes/meetings will allow the children to develop their innate creativity through photography. The photos have the potential to awaken their self-expression and enliven their curiosity. In doing so, they will respectfully document their community past, present and future. Our long-range plans include websites, books, and touring photography exhibits. We hope the images will be finalized in a touring exhibition and a group book, to be viewed within Tanzania and around the world
